The Philippines is an archipelago of over 7,000 islands stretching between just south of Taiwan to north of Brunei and Indonesia. It is a bright, lively country with a few large cities and thousands of gorgeous white sand beaches - over 15,500 kilometres in total - where English is widely understood and spoken.
Rich in history, from its native origins and Spanish colonisation, the Philippines has much to offer - from the sights, culture and shopping in Manila to relaxing white sand beaches and clear blue waters, home to thousands of species of bright coloured fish and coral.
Warm, friendly people, with nowhere more than 2 hours from a wonderful beach and an even warmer tropical climate so close to the Equator, makes for a unique holiday experience that's just more fun in the Philippines !
In much the same way as happens with London, Manila is two areas: the city of Manila proper is the smaller area comprised largely of the older part, which grew in the time of the Spanish colonisation and left us the sights today of Intramuros, the Rizal monument, Manila Bay and much more. As the capital city of the Philippines, it is also home to many of the government and judicial branches of the country. Earliest habitation of the area has been dated from 3,000 BC and there is a rich history long pre-dating the Spanish - the Kingdom of Maynila had a preferential trading relationship with China during the Ming Dynasty. Manila proper is the most densely inhabited city in the world. Metro Manila is the much wider area comprising Manila and 15 adjoining cities, including Makati, Quezon City and Pasay, where Manila Airport is.
Palawan comprises the long narrow Palawan island and roughly 1,780 islands and islets.
